May 2009 / Christians Across America Participate in the 58th Annual National Day of Prayer, Thursday, May 7th
As on many courthouse lawns across the nation, people in Johnson County, Kansas, gathered to worship and pray openly, celebrating the National Day of Prayer for the 58th time, Thursday, May 7th, 2009. Since before the founding of our Republic, Christians have covered the nation in prayer. The Mayflower Compact in 1620 declared that the new country was to be founded for the “advancement of our Christian Faith.” Our first President, George Washington, called for a day of prayer and fasting in June of 1775. In 1812, Francis Scott Key’s poem, which became our National Anthem, ends with “In God is our Trust.” Abraham Lincoln called for a day of prayer and fasting in August of 1861. President Harry Truman declared a National Day of Prayer and signed into law an annual observance, April 17, 1952. President Ronald Reagan signed Public Law 100-307 on January 25, 1988, designating the first Thursday in May as the National Day of Prayer. Bott Radio Network joins with our ministry partners and listeners in observing this special day in America. It is a time to reflect on our blessings, and ask for help with our challenges as a nation and as individual members of the Body of Christ. More than a hundred people gathered to pray at the Johnson County Courthouse in Olathe, Kansas, on the National Day of Prayer. 
Young and old, male and female, all gathered on a beautiful spring day to participate in the National Day of Prayer.

In Olathe, the observance involved a worship band on the gazebo of the Court House, several area pastors leading prayer and many, many citizens participating and exercising their rights to assemble publicly and pray.

Hundreds of thousands of people gathered across America at city halls and court houses to pray at noon for our leaders. 
Although the crowd was large, people gathered in small groups to pray together. 
The NDP theme for this year, "Prayer ... America's Hope," is based on Psalm 33:22, "May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you."
